Notification of the 2020 PWSAC Director Election

In 1985, the Area E salmon permit holders voted in a 2% enhancement tax to be assessed from their gross salmon deliveries.  The funds are collected by the State of Alaska and disbursed to PWSAC for maintaining enhancement programs and operations.

With the enactment of the salmon enhancement tax, the PWSAC Bylaws were amended to provide that every Area E salmon permit holder would be eligible to be a candidate and vote on the Fishermen’s Ballot for the PWSAC Board of Directors.  At least sixty (60%) of the directors are fishermen. The PWSAC Board of Directors has 27 fisherman seats: 10 seine seats, 10 drift gillnet seats, 6 dual permit seats and 1 set gillnet seat.

2019 PWSAC Hatchery Return Forecast

Alaska Salmon Hatcheries Economic Impact

In collaboration with eight regional aquaculture associations, the McDowell group estimates that Alaska’s salmon hatcheries contribute nearly a quarter of the value of our state’s salmon harvests and generate $600 million in economic output. Alaska’s salmon hatcheries account for the annual equivalent of 4,700 jobs and $218 million in total labor income, including all direct, indirect, and induced economic impacts.

PWSAC Economic Impact Study

An independent study conducted by the McDowell group in 2018 determined that between 2012 and 2017, PWS commercial fishermen (all gear types) harvested a cumulative total of 539 million pounds of PWSAC-produced salmon worth $296 million. The annual commercial harvest of PWSAC fish averaged 90 million pounds worth $49 million.

PWSAC salmon accounted for 43 percent of the total PWS salmon harvest volume over the 2012 to 2017 period (1.2 billion pounds) and 45 percent of the total value ($642 million).

Over the 2012-2017 period, more than one in three pink salmon harvested in PWS came from PWSAC.
