PWSAC Cost Recovery Update

Monday, July 13

Wally Noerenberg Hatchery began chum egg-take operations on 7/8 and reached 26% of the egg collection goal by 7/12.
Staff continue to observe a higher than expected proportion of ripe hens, along with above average fecundity (eggs per female). Currently, an estimated 39% of the broodstock needed to complete the eggtake is now available, and fish continue to enter the bay. The average female percentage has been 52%.

Wednesday, July 8

Chum eggtake began today at Wally Noerenberg Hatchery.  Staff report a good number of ripe hens with above average fecundity.  An estimated 24 percent of brood is available behind the barrier seine and fish continue to move into the bay daily.

Main Bay Hatchery has an estimated 95 percent of the brood goal available behind the barrier seine.  Brood entry into the freshwater pond for ripening continues daily.

Yesterday, chum cost recovery operations resumed at WNH for the first time since June 21: a limited harvest of approximately 45,000 pounds was conducted. A large body of fish was observed outside the bay which prompted a small harvest to provide additional information on fish availability and movement. Catcher boats estimate the number of fish is not sufficient enough to support additional cost recovery efforts at this time. To date, WNH has achieved 12% of its broodstock goal.

MBH staff continue to collect brood, although fish movement has slowed in recent days. To date, staff have collected approximately half of the broodstock goal behind the barrier seine.

Tuesday, June 30

Chum cost recovery at Wally Noerenberg Hatchery continues to be suspended for brood collection. Cost recovery will restart as soon as sufficient fish are available for harvest.

Thursday, June 25

PWSAC began chum cost recovery at Wally Noerenberg Hatchery on 6/15, and harvest continued regularly through 6/23. Due to low run entry, cost recovery has been temporarily suspended to prioritize broodstock collection. Hatchery staff will continue to evaluate run entry daily.  Cost recovery operations at WNH will resume once sufficient fish are available to meet broodstock collection needs and cost recovery objectives.  An estimated 2,000 fish are currently available as brood, of the 228,000 goal.

Main Bay Hatchery began sockeye cost recovery on 6/12 and the sockeye revenue goal was achieved on 6/25.

As of today, the total gillnet revenue goal is 74% complete.

Wednesday, June 24

PWSAC began chum cost recovery at Wally Noerenberg Hatchery on 6/15 and continued regularly through 6/23. Due to low run entry, cost recovery has been suspended until Monday to support brood collection. Run entry will be evaluated daily by staff and cost recovery will restart when sufficient fish are available as brood and for harvest. An estimated 2,000 fish of the 228,000 brood goal have been collected to date.

Main Bay Hatchery started cost recovery on 6/12.  Run entry has been steady and cost recovery fishing occurs daily. The most recent average size was 4.2 pounds.

As of today, the total gillnet revenue goal is 72% complete.

Tuesday, June 23

PWSAC began chum cost recovery at Wally Noerenberg Hatchery on 6/15 and continued daily through 6/21. Fish harvested on 6/21 averaged 8.0 pounds. Cost recovery resumed today and will continue daily as fish entry allows. WNH staff began brood collection and are monitoring fish entry daily.

Friday, June 19

PWSAC began chum cost recovery at Wally Noerenberg Hatchery on 6/15 and has continued daily. Fish harvested on 6/18 averaged 8.1 pounds. Cost recovery is expected to continue daily as fish entry allows.

Thursday, June 18

PWSAC began chum cost recovery at Wally Noerenberg Hatchery on 6/15 and has continued daily. The fish harvested on 6/17 were 8.1 pounds on average. Cost recovery is expected to continue daily as fish entry allows.

Main Bay Hatchery began sockeye cost recovery on 6/12.  Run entry has been steady and cost recovery fishing has continued regularly. The most recent average size was 3.9 pounds.

As of today, the total gillnet revenue goal is 31% complete.

Wednesday, June 17

PWSAC began chum cost recovery at Wally Noerenberg Hatchery on 6/15 and has continued daily. The fish harvested on 6/16 were 7.7 pounds on average. Cost recovery is expected to continue daily as fish entry allows.

Main Bay Hatchery began sockeye cost recovery on 6/12.  Run entry has been steady and cost recovery has continued regularly. The most recent average size was 4 pounds.

As of today, the total gillnet revenue goal is 19.7% complete.

Tuesday, June 16

PWSAC began cost recovery at Wally Noerenberg Hatchery on Monday 6/15 and continued Tuesday 6/16. The average chum size was 6.8 pounds on 6/15 and 7.7 pounds on 6/16. Cost recovery is expected to continue daily as fish entry allows.

MBH started cost recovery on 6/12.  Run entry has been steady and cost recovery fishing is continuing regularly.  The average is 3.8 lbs.

As of today, the total gillnet revenue goal is 16% complete.
