Position Title: FOOD SERVICE COOK II
Category: Full time, Temporary

Location: Remote (off-grid), Hatchery or Field Station
Customary Work Hours: 40-to-50 hour workweek 

Essential Functions: Work performed at any hatchery or remote location as needed. Must be able to move about freely; ability to lift and carry 30 pounds; ability to climb stairs; ability to climb aboard small aircraft; use telephones and computers unimpaired. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language. Must be able to hear and see to receive verbal and written instructions.

Basic Function: The Food Service Cook functions as part of the hatchery operations team in the cultivating and rearing of fish. Under direct supervision, performs routine semi-skilled work in various aspects of food service, complying with all applicable sanitation, health, and personal hygiene standards.

Food Service Cook II – This class is the developmental level in the food service cook series. Incumbents perform routine and repetitive kitchen tasks such as simple food preparations, assist in simple cooking, serve food, and clean food service equipment and areas.

Description of duties and tasks:

  • Under direction, assists in preparing three meals per day with a minimum of one featured entree per meal accompanies by two side dishes.
  • Assists in food production planning to coordinate with meal serving hours so that excellence, quality, temperature and appearance of food are preserved.
  • Stores food properly and safely, marking the date and item.
  • Keeps work area neat and clean at all times; cleans and maintains equipment used in food preparation.
  • Leads by example work flow or scheduling to other crew members in a team.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and ability to use kitchen tools and cleaning equipment safely and effectively.
  • Knowledge of the practices, methods and procedures of volume food preparation, cooking times and serving temperatures.
  • Knowledge of food handling, storage, and rotation techniques to avoid cross-contamination and recognize critical control points.
  • Knowledge of computer operations and software.

Maintenance Support

Position Title: Maintenance Support
Category: Temporary

Location: Anchorage Distribution Center and remote, off-grid hatcheries
Customary Work Hours: 8:00 – 5:00, Monday – Friday occasional weekend work
Supervisor’s Title: Chief Maintenance Manager

Basic Function: The incumbent will inventory physical items and enter data through prescribed methods at all PWSAC sites. Identification marks used will include but not be limited to VIN, HIN, serial and make/model numbers and physical descriptions. Receives direct supervision and specific instruction.

Primary Responsibilities: This position is responsible for identifying and cataloging all maintenance department items and supplies at each PWSAC site. Work is conducted mainly in remote settings with dorm-style lodging.

Description of essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Physically identify all equipment, tools, facility systems, components and supplies, machines, generators, and appliances.
  • Catalog items using Company software, completing all required fields
  • Take and label pictures of identified items using prescribed checklists
  • Enter data into Company provided computer software systems
  • Save and organize files and data in Company provided digital libraries
  • Work with maintenance staff, site managers and other PWSAC employees for purposes of inventory location and item identification
  • Complete progress reports
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, and other structures
  • Knowledge of maintenance department equipment, generators, and general system components for purpose of efficient identification

Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language. Must be able to hear and see to identify item identifying marks and to receive verbal and written instructions. The noise level in the work environment is usually mild, however may be occasionally high depending on the project. Must be able to complete work on computers and electronic devices

Fish Culturist I (10-Month)

The Fish Culturist I (10 month) is a regular, full-time position with benefits.  Position available at the Wally Noerenberg Hatchery in the Prince William Sound of Alaska.

Basic Function:  Fish Culturist I functions as part of the hatchery operations team in the cultivating and rearing of fish.  Under supervision, initiates, supervises and performs complex paraprofessional or technical field, laboratory, or office work, or directs minor segments in various phases of hatchery operations.  Independent judgment is exercised with written procedural approaches and only unique and complex situations referred to the supervisor.

 

Distinguishing Characteristics:  This class is the first working level of the fish culturist series.  Incumbents may act as the technical project leader of a programmatic segment of a hatchery project.  As senior technical specialists, incumbents are allowed discretion in achieving objectives directed toward goals and assignments which require considerable knowledge of principles and practices of aquaculture, and a thorough knowledge of culture for one or more salmonid species. Incumbents summarize data in written reports and write recommendations for management decisions, and assist in writing the annual report representing the segment of the project for which the position is responsible.  Positions have authority to initiate and direct the work of lower level technicians and perform on-going functions in the areas of field logistics, supply and personnel/payroll.  Work may involve contact with the public.

Fish Culturist I is distinguished from the II level in that incumbents manage a segment of a project and/or assist higher level culturists in managing a project; and they do not serve as acting manager of the hatchery in the absence of the Hatchery Manager and the Assistant Manager.

 

Description of duties and tasks:      

  • Fish propagation: Enumerating, caring, killing, spawning and disposing of carcasses; preparing, cleaning and maintaining incubator; monitoring and maintaining water quality; loading, enumerating, picking and caring for egg/alevin; rearing, enumerating and setting up outmigration of fry; perform other general duties associated with fish culture operations.
  • Fish Harvest: Preparing, repairing and maintaining harvest equipment; loading, transporting, caring for and unloading harvest pens; collecting and recording fish harvest management data.
  • Takes samples from commercial fisheries catches for data on species, size, age and sex composition; collects scales, otoliths, ovaries or other biological specimens, scale mounting.
  • Site cleanup, general maintenance and repair, cleans, sweeps or shovels snow.
  • Leads by example work flow or scheduling to other crew members in a team.
  • Use computers and computer software to conduct routine data entry or output.
  • Performs as a crew leader supervising lower level technicians in the performance of routine duties, maintenance and operations.  May train lower level technicians in the collection of biological data or samples, performance of hatchery operations and/or operation of field stations, etc.
  • Performs simple functions in the areas of personnel, procurement and supply to maintain a steady workflow for daily scheduled tasks.
  • Maintains and adjusts water supplies to provide desired quality, quantity and temperature to incubation and rearing units.
  • Use computers and computer software to conduct routine data entry or output.
  • Serves as a project leader of a remote field station.
  • Helps the project supervisor in the area of supply procurement and quarterly ordering as it applies to project budgets.
  • Communicates daily information to supervisor to maintain logistical support of crews.
  • Recommends procedures, techniques and new equipment to improve work efficiencies or adaptation to new techniques.
  • Organizes, collects and presents data for reports and compiles information or assists in the writing of reports; compiles data and simple reports and/or maps; performs statistical computations; designs logs and forms for data collection.
  • Discriminates, counts and measures annual growth marks on fish scales.
  • Effectively interacts with public and directs inquiries to appropriate department or persons.
  • Performs laboratory work such as identification and processing of fish, plankton or parts thereof.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Highschool Diploma or GED 
  • One year entry-level experience as fish or wildlife technician, or one-year technical laboratory or fieldwork experience 
  • One year advanced level experience as a fish or wildlife technician 

Substitutions:

  • Associates of Science or Associates of Applied Science degrees in the areas of aquaculture, biology, fisheries, wildlife, or marine technologies may substitute for a maximum of one year of technical laboratory or fieldwork experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management or habitat protection. One year of experience as a fish and wildlife technician or aide (II or higher) is required.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife, or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of one year of technical laboratory or fieldwork experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management or habitat protection. Six months as a fish and wildlife technician or aide (II or higher) is required.
  • Maintenance work experience at PWSAC hatcheries may count toward the fish and wildlife technician or aide work experience if it can be demonstrated that fish culture work was done during the time of employment and to meet the required time minimums.

Purchasing/Logistics Manager

Position Title: Purchasing/Logistics Manager

Supervisor’s Title: Assistant Operations Manager

Basic Function: The Purchasing/Logistics Manager functions as part of the hatchery support team in the purchasing, shipping, receiving, and distribution activities of the Corporation. Works with the Assistant Operations Manager and Distribution Manager of the operation of the Anchorage Distribution Center (ADC) requiring management level decision making capability.

Primary Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the position include working with the Assistant Operations Manager in the purchasing, shipping, receiving, fleet management and logistics activities of the ADC. Administrative responsibilities include the planning, budgeting, documenting, assessing and improving the purchasing and logistics functions.

Description of duties and tasks:

  • Develops and implements efficient supply chain processes, including planning, ordering, inventory management, and distribution. Ensures timely processing of purchase requests, proper coding and pricing review, and purchase order generation. Manages vendor orders, tracks received supplies, resolves delayed shipments, completes receiving documentation in company systems, and determines optimal shipping methods
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with vendors
  • Develops and maintains preferred vendor relationships for best pricing, service and delivery guarantees based on budget and schedule requirements
  • Ensures continuity of Distribution Center operations by effectively performing assigned tasks in the absence of the Assistant Operations Manager, maintaining workflow efficiency and adherence to established processes.
  • Informs the Distribution Manager for coordination of freight pickup
  • Manages PWSAC site equipment rentals from initiation to finish
  • Responsible for office operations, building repair maintenance needs
  • Prepares the annual ADC operations budget for presentation to the Assistant Operations Manager
  • Monitors, oversees and administers the Anchorage Distribution Center budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources and adhering to approved amounts
  • Reviews costs for standard purchases, distributes updates for organization-wide budgeting purposes
  • Responsible to ensure the implementation and compliance of PWSAC’s safety program at the Anchorage Distribution Center in conjunction with the site safety rep (DC manager)
  • Identifies and recommends new procedures, techniques, and equipment to enhance efficiency and adapt to evolving operational needs.
  • Plans and arranges hospitality needs for PWSAC meetings held at the Anchorage Distribution Center
  • Manages reconciliation of petty cash and staff expense reports for the Anchorage Distribution Center.

Supervisor’s Title:  Purchasing/Logistics Manager 

Basic Function: The Distribution Center Receiving Clerk functions as part of the hatchery support team in the shipping, receiving, and distribution activities of the Corporation.  Under general supervision, performs work in various phases of hatchery support and operation of the Anchorage Distribution Center.   

Primary Responsibilities:  The responsibilities of the position include assisting the Purchasing/Logistics Manager and Logistics Lead in the purchasing, shipping, receiving, and distribution activities of the Anchorage Distribution Center; and transporting freight to and from the barge landing sites and vendor locations. 

Description of duties and tasks:  

  • Drive a box van to make deliveries, pick up orders. 
  • Receive incoming vendor deliveries, accurately counting and comparing delivered supplies to the corresponding purchase order, recording damage or discrepancies.
  • Maintain shipping manifest, bill of ladings, delivery schedule and receiving summaries.
  • Follow 49 CFR regulations in regard to the preparation and shipping of freight.
  • Label, weigh, organize and consolidate supplies for shipping according to delivery schedules.
  • Operate a forklift to receive and unload freight from vendor deliveries; load supplies in shipping vans and/or flatbed for shipping, observe correct weight distribution and load securing protocol
  • Site cleanup, general maintenance and repair, cleans, sweeps or shovels snow.

On Call Pool

Prince William Sound Aquaculture Corporation will be accepting applications for an as-needed temporary employee pool to call upon when needed. These positions may be located in an office setting (Cordova/Anchorage) or at a remote hatchery location.

Placement is not a guarantee, need based on skills and qualifications. Applications submitted with interest will be reviewed as needed.
