Position Title: FOOD SERVICE COOK III – Lead
Category: Full time, Temporary
Payroll Classification: Hourly, Non-exempt
Location: Remote (off-grid), Hatchery or Field Station
Customary Work Hours: 40-to-50-hour workweek 

Essential Functions: Work performed at any hatchery or remote location as needed. Must be able to move about freely; ability to lift and carry 30 pounds; ability to climb stairs; ability to climb aboard small aircraft; use telephones and computers unimpaired. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language. Must be able to hear and see to receive verbal and written instructions.

Basic Function: The Food Service Cook III functions as part of the hatchery operations team in the cultivating and rearing of fish. Under general direction, implements the authorized meal plan schedule by preparing and/or directing the preparation of homestyle (prepared from scratch) meals to be served, complying with all applicable sanitation, health and personal hygiene standards.

Food Services Cook III – This class is the senior working level of the food service cook series. Incumbents perform a leadership role in planning, preparation, and serving three meals and snacks for hatchery employees and their residing families, visiting employees, and on-site construction crews.

Food Service Cook III is distinguished from the II level in that incumbents lead the implementation of the hatchery food service program; fully proficient using standard methods and techniques, and can use a variety of interrelated skills to independently complete work that conforms to industry standards; supervise lower level food service cooks.

Description of duties and tasks:

  • In coordination with the hatchery food service program support team, prepares grocery orders for perishable foods, dairy and needed supplies with at least a one week lead-time for order fulfillment.
  • Documents and inventories all incoming food and supply orders.
  • Assists in preparing weekly work schedule with the Hatchery Manager.
  • Implements the authorized meal plan schedule to create varied, nutritious meals and snacks.
  • Prepares three meals per day with a minimum of one featured entrée per meal accompanied by two side dishes.
  • Plans food production to coordinate with meal serving hours so that excellence, quality, temperature and appearance of food are preserved.
  • Completes frozen and dry goods inventories quarterly and at the end of the season.
  • Ensures proper food storage and safety, marking the date and item.
  • Monitors daily temperatures of refrigerators and freezers.
  • Keeps work area neat and clean at all times; cleans and maintains equipment used in food preparation.
  • Supervises and participates in daily clean-up of kitchen and common dining areas.
  • Supervises and participates in routine cleaning of freezers and refrigerators.
  • Responsible for the security of kitchen and food storage areas.
  • Supervises lower level commissary cooks.
  • Within the food service section, assures implementation of the hatchery safety program and related functions.
  • Recommends procedures, techniques and new equipment to improve work efficiencies or adaptation to new techniques.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the practices, methods and procedures of volume food preparation, cooking times and serving temperatures.
  • Knowledge of food handling, storage and rotation techniques to avoid cross contamination and recognize critical control points.
  • Knowledge of regular or modified diets/menus, content and limitations.
  • Knowledge of computer operations and software.
  • Knowledge of personnel management; skill in creating and maintaining an atmosphere of teamwork.
  • Ability to prepare several menu items simultaneously, which may include both hot and cold items.
  • Ability to ensure adequate kitchen and food supplies and equipment repair.
  • Ability to plan and prepare meals for transport to field operation areas.
  • Ability to assign, monitor, train and/or evaluate daily tasks of lower level commissary cooks
  • Skill in preparing, seasoning, cooking and baking the full range of foodstuffs that meet the standards of taste, temperature, appearance, texture, and diet requirements.
  • Skill in resourceful creativity with supplies and inventory to minimize food waste.

Minimum Qualifications

Food Service Cook III – Begins at $27.96/hour 

  • Post-secondary degree from an accredited vocational-training school in culinary arts 
    • Substitutions: Three years of progressively responsible work experience in food service will substitute for the required post-secondary education

  • Two years of experience in a cafeteria, production/commercial kitchen, or field camp
  • Current, valid driver’s license
  • Alaska Food Workers Card

Armin F Koernig Hatchery

Located on Evans Island at the south-western entrance of the Prince William Sound. This facility will be rearing pink and chum salmon for ocean release as smolt. AFK collects approximately 190 million pink salmon eggs during eggtake operations. Meal services provided for staff sizes ranging from 10 to 20 people.

Cannery Creek Hatchery

Located in Unakwik Inlet at the northern end of the Prince William Sound. This facility will be rearing pink salmon for ocean release as smolt. CCH collects approximately 187 million pink salmon eggs during eggtake operations. Meal services provided for staff sizes ranging from 13 to 30 people.

Main Bay Hatchery 

Located at Main Bay in the mid-west section of Prince William Sound, south of Whittier. This facility will be rearing sockeye salmon for ocean release as smolt. MBH collects approximately 12.4 million sockeye salmon eggs during eggtake operations.  Meal services provided for staff sizes ranging from 15 to 20 people.

Wally Noerenberg Hatchery 

Located on Esther Island in the Prince William Sound, east of Whittier. This facility will be rearing pink, chum, and coho salmon for ocean release as smolt. WNH collects approximately 148 million pink, 153 million chum, 4 million coho, and 50 thousand Chinook salmon eggs during eggtake operations.  Meal services provided for staff sizes ranging from 20 to 30 people.

Receiving Clerk/Truck Driver

This position is located at the PWSAC Distribution Center in Anchorage, AK

Basic Function:

The Distribution Center Receiving Clerk/Truck Driver functions as part of the hatchery support team in the purchasing, shipping, receiving, and distribution activities of the Corporation.  Under general supervision by the Purchasing/Logistics Manager, performs work in various phases of hatchery support and operation of the Anchorage Distribution Center. 

Primary Responsibilities: 

The responsibilities of the position include assisting the Purchasing/Logistics Manager, Logistics Lead, and Distribution Center staff in the purchasing, shipping, receiving, and distribution activities of the Anchorage Distribution Center; and transporting freight to and from the barge landing sites and vendor locations.

Description of duties and tasks:      

  • Drive a box van to make deliveries, pick up orders, and purchase supplies.
  • Receive incoming vendor deliveries, accurately counting and comparing delivered supplies to the corresponding purchase order, recording damage or discrepancies.
  • Consolidate delivery documentation – purchase orders, invoices, receipts, manifests -for each delivery.
  • Maintain shipping manifest, bill of ladings, delivery schedule and receiving summaries.
  • Label, weigh, organize and consolidate supplies for compliance with 49CFR and 29CFR shipping and according to delivery schedules.
  • Operate a forklift to receive and unload freight from vendor deliveries in a safe manner.
  • Site cleanup, general maintenance and repair to facilities, shovel snow.
  • Leads by example workflow or scheduling to other crew members in a team.
  • Use computers and computer software to conduct routine data entry or output.
  • Load shipping vans using proper weight distribution procedures.
  • Load and secure freight on flatbed trailers according to the Alaska Department of Transportation standards.
  • Transport and deliver shipping vans and flatbed trailers to and from the barge landing sites and vendor locations.
  • Implement preventative maintenance schedules for shipping vans, flatbed trailers, Freightliner trucks, box van, forklift, and other hatchery support equipment.
  • Maintain an inventory of parts for minor repairs to trucks and vans –  lights, plastic grommets, hose couplers.
  • Record and track maintenance activities log, chassis registrations, equipment inspection, and repair records.
  • Recommends procedures, techniques, and new equipment to improve work efficiencies or adapt to new techniques.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Capital Projects Manager

Position Title: Capital Projects Manager

Supervisor’s Title: General Manager

Basic Function: The incumbent will plan, direct, or coordinate, activities concerned with the construction and management of structures, facilities, and system projects. Participate in the conceptual development of a construction project and oversee its organization, scheduling, budgeting, and implementation ensuring project completion on time and within budget.

Primary Responsibilities: This position is responsible for identifying, planning and managing capital and construction projects at all PWSAC sites of operation. Supervisory level is long range administrative. The Capital Projects Manager conducts work independently in accordance with PWSAC plans and policies and goals within the project management scope.

Description of essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop recommendations for strategically planned capital projects and schedules to meet budget and production needs
  • Seeks external sources of funding when applicable
  • Plan, schedule, or coordinate construction project activities to meet deadlines
  • Evaluate construction methods and determine cost-effectiveness of plans
  • Oversee PWSAC’s RFP process, reviews bids, and provides a contractor recommendation to PWSAC senior management
  • Prepare contracts or negotiate revisions to contractual agreements with contractors and suppliers. Ensure all third parties and contractors are oriented and understand PWSAC rules and protocols before commencement of a project
  • Provide all necessary documents to PWSAC’s Finance Department for performing work such as W-9 and insurance certificates
  • Prepare and submit budget estimates, progress reports, or cost tracking reports
  • Interpret and explain plans and contract terms to PWSAC senior management
  • Direct or supervise construction and related or craft workers and contractors
  • Work with PWSAC management and contractors to discuss and resolve matters, such as work procedures, complaints, or construction problems
  • Study job specifications, blueprints, and other schematics to determine appropriate construction methods
  • Inspect or review projects to monitor compliance with building and safety codes, environmental or other regulations

Landing Craft Captain/Master

The Vessel Captain works on board the M/V Alaskan Challenger and is required to live on the vessel during seaday rotations.

Position Title: VESSEL CAPTAIN

Organizational Unit:  Alaskan Challenger Operations

Location: M/V Alaskan Challenger, PWS ports or hatchery sites

Work Hours: Seadays (variable, seven days per week);  Shore-based 8:00 AM -5:00 PM, Monday – Friday

Supervisor’s Title: Production Manager

Basic Function: The Vessel Captain functions collaboratively with the Production Manager in the efficient transport of freight and personnel to and from the hatchery sites and ports located in Prince William Sound.

Primary Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities of the position are to work closely with the Production Manager for vessel scheduling and operation, maintain the freight vessel in ready status, administration of vessel operations and supervise vessel crew members.

Essential Functions: Work performed on the PWSAC vessel while at sea, in port, shipyard or hatchery location as duties require. Must be able to move about freely; work outdoors in all weather conditions; ability to lift and carry 50 pounds; ability to climb stairs and ladders; work around water – on docks, floats, on deck; ability to climb aboard and about vessels and small aircraft; dexterity to maneuver through tight spaces and good balance on uneven, wet surfaces and in rough water; use radios, compasses, electronic navigational equipment, telephones and computers unimpaired. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language. Must be able to hear and see to receive verbal and written instructions.

Description of duties and tasks:

Delivery Services

  • Will coordinate with the Production Manager for the scheduling of vessel services, determining the vessel’s course for efficiency, hatchery priorities and safety
  • Work with the hatchery personnel to determine optimum delivery times when tide cycles affect the delivery process
  • Oversee and participate in the loading, stowing, and unloading of cargo or passengers
  • Will drive jockey trucks around yards and on and off the vessel during the loading and unloading of cargo

Vessel Maintenance

  • Will maintain the vessel and its equipment to comply with the Coast Guard’s certificate of inspection requirements and participate in Coast Guard inspections as scheduled
  • In coordination with Production Manager will develop and maintain a preventative maintenance schedule for the vessel and delivery vehicles
  • Accurately records and logs all boat maintenance and improvements
  • Verifies that machinery and equipment are in good working order and perform as needed routine or preventative maintenance
  • Oversees repairs ensuring completion in a timely manner to maintain the ready status
  • Caretaking duties of the vessel and delivery vehicles include, but are not limited to: inspection of the vessel and vehicles, performing or assigning preventative maintenance duties, ensuring all areas of the vessel are maintained in a clean and orderly fashion, and snow removal

Administrative

  • Works closely with the Production Manager in supply planning and ordering, maintaining an inventory and equipment for the preventative maintenance schedule or improvements
  • Tracks and records all expenses; tracking the purchasing activities to assure spending is within budget
  • Develops and maintains effective logs and records tracking the vessel’s movement, cargo on board, passengers on board, and efforts in controlling pollution
  • Logs preventative maintenance performed on the vessel and delivery vehicles, prepares activity reports for the corporate office
  • Completes rough drafts of annual reports and operations plans
  • Enforces company policy by acting as a liaison between the administration offices and vessel staff

Supervises Crew

  • While on rotation will take command of the operation of the vessel and ensures that proper procedures and safety practices are followed
  • supervises the work of all crew for operations including steering the vessel, operating and maintaining engines, offloading cargo, handling lines, maintenance, caretaking duties, upkeep of the vessel, and communication with other vessels

Qualifications:

  1. Valid, current Coast Guard 100 Ton Near Coastal Masters license
  2. 1 year experience as Master/Captain on a landing craft vessel 50′ or larger
  3. Sea time experience in Alaska navigational waters
  4. Experience navigating and performing beach landings with a gated vessel
  5. Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by the Department of Homeland Security
  6. FCC Marine Radio Operators License
  7. Experience driving cargo on/off a landing craft using a yard truck/jockey truck, preferred
  8. Thorough working knowledge of Coast Guard regulations, in particular those specific to inspections and licensing, 46 CFR
  9. A mechanical aptitude and demonstrated skills and knowledge of the various systems operational to a freight vessel sufficient for troubleshooting and performing direct frontline maintenance if needed
  10. Must be able to demonstrate supervisory skills and abilities
  11. Strong communication skills
  12. Working knowledge of budgeting and related fiscal matters

Fish Culturist I

Basic Function:  Fish Culturist I functions as part of the hatchery operations team in the cultivating and rearing of fish.  Under supervision, initiates, supervises and performs complex paraprofessional or technical field, laboratory, or office work, or directs minor segments in various phases of hatchery operations.  Independent judgment is exercised with written procedural approaches and only unique and complex situations referred to the supervisor.

 

Distinguishing Characteristics:  This class is the first working level of the fish culturist series.  Incumbents may act as the technical project leader of a programmatic segment of a hatchery project.  As senior technical specialists, incumbents are allowed discretion in achieving objectives directed toward goals and assignments which require considerable knowledge of principles and practices of aquaculture, and a thorough knowledge of culture for one or more salmonid species. Incumbents summarize data in written reports and write recommendations for management decisions, and assist in writing the annual report representing the segment of the project for which the position is responsible.  Positions have authority to initiate and direct the work of lower level technicians and perform on-going functions in the areas of field logistics, supply and personnel/payroll.  Work may involve contact with the public.

Fish Culturist I is distinguished from the II level in that incumbents manage a segment of a project and/or assist higher level culturists in managing a project; and they do not serve as acting manager of the hatchery in the absence of the Hatchery Manager and the Assistant Manager.

 

Description of duties and tasks:      

  • Fish propagation: Enumerating, caring, killing, spawning and disposing of carcasses; preparing, cleaning and maintaining incubator; monitoring and maintaining water quality; loading, enumerating, picking and caring for egg/alevin; rearing, enumerating and setting up outmigration of fry; perform other general duties associated with fish culture operations.
  • Fish Harvest: Preparing, repairing and maintaining harvest equipment; loading, transporting, caring for and unloading harvest pens; collecting and recording fish harvest management data.
  • Takes samples from commercial fisheries catches for data on species, size, age and sex composition; collects scales, otoliths, ovaries or other biological specimens, scale mounting.
  • Site cleanup, general maintenance and repair, cleans, sweeps or shovels snow.
  • Leads by example work flow or scheduling to other crew members in a team.
  • Use computers and computer software to conduct routine data entry or output.
  • Performs as a crew leader supervising lower level technicians in the performance of routine duties, maintenance and operations.  May train lower level technicians in the collection of biological data or samples, performance of hatchery operations and/or operation of field stations, etc.
  • Performs simple functions in the areas of personnel, procurement and supply to maintain a steady workflow for daily scheduled tasks.
  • Maintains and adjusts water supplies to provide desired quality, quantity and temperature to incubation and rearing units.
  • Use computers and computer software to conduct routine data entry or output.

  • Helps the project supervisor in the area of supply procurement and quarterly ordering as it applies to project budgets.

Substitutions:

  • Associates of Science or Associates of Applied Science degrees in the areas of aquaculture, biology, fisheries, wildlife, or marine technologies may substitute for a maximum of one year of technical laboratory or fieldwork experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management or habitat protection. One year of experience as a fish and wildlife technician or aide (II or higher) is required.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife, or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of one year of technical laboratory or fieldwork experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management or habitat protection. Six months as a fish and wildlife technician or aide (II or higher) is required.
  • Maintenance work experience at PWSAC hatcheries may count toward the fish and wildlife technician or aide work experience if it can be demonstrated that fish culture work was done during the time of employment and to meet the required time minimums.

Maintenance Manager

Basic Function: The Maintenance Manager functions as part of the hatchery operations team in the cultivating and rearing of fish. Under general direction, the incumbent will plan, manage, and conduct year-round, 24-hour a day when necessary, preventative maintenance and repair duties for the efficient operation of the overall hatchery facility and equipment.

Primary Responsibilities: The Maintenance Manager works closely with the Hatchery Manager to plan, manage, and implement facility maintenance, repair, and improvement programs as well as supervising maintenance and repair projects. Administrative responsibilities include assisting the manager in the planning, budgeting, documenting, assessing, and improving hatchery operations.

Description of duties and tasks:

  • Hatchery Systems: Developing and implementing preventative maintenance schedules; keeping updated spare parts lists; lead person in performing maintenance and repair on generators, hatchery heating and hot water systems, pumps and fuel distribution systems,  recycle system,  lake pump house and emergency pump system,  lighting systems,  emergency fire systems,  hatchery domestic water and wastewater system; maintaining updated operations manual for fuel system; fabricating new tools and equipment; and other similar duties.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Developing and implementing preventative maintenance schedules for all hatchery equipment including, but not limited to; hydroelectric turbine generators, diesel generators, front-end loaders, pickup trucks, gas pumps,  outboard motors,  welders,  cement mixers,  steam cleaner, pressure washer, snow removal equipment, power tools, and other such tools and equipment.
  • Building Maintenance: Developing and implementing architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical system preventative maintenance schedules for all facility buildings. 
  • Participates in the development of long-range plans for the facility.
  • Consults with other maintenance and hatchery managers to resolve problems in hatchery maintenance.
  • Assures state and federal regulatory and permit compliance related to all aspects of hatchery operations.

Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Human Resources and Employee Logistics Specialist is responsible for coordinating all aspects of organization travel and providing Human Resources support. This role also assists with accounting reconciliations, logistics-based vendor administration, and assigned report tracking. Primary Responsibilities
• Manage the full travel cycle from initial request through payment processing
• Arrange and confirm employee and contractor travel in compliance with established procedures, policies, budget guidelines, and approval processes

Fisheries Technician

Jumpstart your fisheries career and gain hands-on experience working with Pacific Salmon at large-scale hatcheries in Alaska. Summer and Fall projects (June to September) will focus on eggtake operations – collecting eggs and milt from adult salmon. Project lengths focused on eggtake typically range from six to eight weeks, with limited projects ranging up to four months.

Located on Evans Island at the south-western entrance of the Prince William Sound. AFK is a remote, off-grid facility only accessible by boat or float plane. Typical transport to AFK is provided via boat from Whittier, AK, and the direct route is about three hours. This facility will rear pink and chum salmon for release into the ocean as fry. Approximately 172 million pink salmon and 19.5 million chum salmon fry are released every year in May. An additional 40 million chum salmon fry are released at the remote station site in Port Chalmers every year in May. AFK collects approximately 190 million pink salmon eggs during eggtake operations in late August through late September.

Cannery Creek Hatchery (CCH)

Located in Unakwik Inlet at the northern end of the Prince William Sound. CCH is a remote, off-grid facility only accessible by boat or float plane. Typical transport to CCH is provided via boat from Whittier, AK, and the direct route is about two hours. This facility will rear pink salmon for release into the ocean as fry. Approximately 168 million pink salmon fry are released every year in May. CCH collects approximately 187 million pink salmon eggs during eggtake operations in late August through late September.

Gulkana Hatchery (GH)

Located in the interior near Paxson, AK, along the Gulkana River. GH is a rural facility accessible by vehicle with a remote, off-grid release and collection site, Crosswinds, located in a backcountry/wilderness setting. Typical transport to GH is provided via vehicle from Anchorage, AK, and the direct route is about five hours. Typical transport to Crosswinds is provided via small air bushcraft. This facility will rear sockeye salmon for release into lakes and rivers as fry. Approximately 22 million sockeye salmon fry are released every year, beginning in April and ending in July. GH collects approximately 36.75 million sockeye salmon eggs during eggtake operations in late August through early October.

Main Bay Hatchery (MBH)

Located at Main Bay in the mid-west section of Prince William Sound, south of Whittier. MBH is a remote, off-grid facility only accessible by boat or float plane. Typical transport to MBH is provided via boat from Whittier, AK, and the direct route is about one and a half hours. This facility will rear sockeye salmon for release into the ocean as smolt. Approximately 10.5 million sockeye salmon smolt are released every year in May. MBH collects approximately 12.4 million sockeye salmon eggs during eggtake operations in late July through late August.

Located on Esther Island in the Prince William Sound, east of Whittier. WNH is a remote, off-grid facility only accessible by boat or float plane. Typical transport to WNH is provided via boat from Whittier, AK, and the direct route is about one hour. This facility will rear pink, chum, and coho salmon for release into the ocean as fry and smolt. Approximately 133 million pink salmon fry and 73 million chum fry are released every year in May. About 3.5 million coho salmon and 46 thousand chinook salmon smolt are released in June.  WNH collects approximately 148 million pink, 153 million chum, 4 million coho, and 50 thousand chinook salmon eggs during eggtake operations.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Fisheries Technician is a vital member of the hatchery operations team, supporting the cultivation, propagation, harvest, spawning, and rearing of Pacific Salmon. This position requires residency at the hatchery site and on-premises attendance. The position during peak operations may require tasks for fish monitoring performed outside of the standard working schedule. 

This position spans three tiers of responsibility:
•    (Entry-Level) Tier I performs routine, entry-level fish culture and hands-on labor tasks under close supervision
•    (Intermediate) Tier II performs semi-skilled hatchery project-based duties with increased independence and gains technical proficiency
•    (Advanced) Tier III performs advanced technical duties and may act as a lead in day-to-day hatchery projects

All tiers of Fisheries Technicians work across hatchery, field, and marine environments, performing fish husbandry, biological sampling, data collection, equipment operation, small boat handling, and facility maintenance. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBLITIES
Tier I (Entry-Level)
•    Assist with Eggtake procedures, including enumerating, killing, spawning, and carcass disposal 
•    Prepare and clean incubators, raceways, troughs, pens, and tanks
•    Hand-feed fry and smolt using manual hand tools
•    Assist with incubation procedures, including loading, enumerating, picking, and caring for eggs
•    Assist with outmigration and release of fry and/or smolt
•    May assist with maintaining harvest equipment and operations, including loading, transporting, and unloading harvest sampling gear 
•    Record basic data using paper forms or digital devices
•    Perform general site cleanup, minor repairs, groundskeeping, and snow removal
•    Operate small boats (skiffs) for saltwater rearing and other equipment such as hand and power tools
•    Report to work reliably and on time, and must communicate any anticipated absences or delays to their supervisor in advance whenever possible  
•    Adhere to all safety protocols and workplace policies relevant to this position 
•    Maintain professionalism and respectful conduct to support a positive and constructive workplace; behavior that undermines safety or mutual respect is not acceptable 

Tier II (Intermediate)
•    Perform all duties in Tier I with limited or no supervision
•    Under rare circumstances may assist in biological sampling to collect scales, otoliths, and ovaries 
•    Under rare circumstances may assist with scale mounting and otolith reading
•    Operate small boats (skiffs) and ATVs for assigned hatchery activities
•    Maintain and adjust water systems under direction to ensure optimal conditions for fish health
•    Use computers and software to enter and organize data
•    Lead small task teams and assist with mentoring Tier I technicians

Tier III (Advanced)
•    Perform all duties listed in Tier I and Tier II with limited or no supervision
•    Perform independent fish culture tasks during all hatchery life stage cycles
•    Act as a lead in hatchery projects and labor tasks
•    Mentor Tier I and Tier II technicians
•    Operate small boats (skiffs), ATVs, and snowmobiles for assigned hatchery activities
•    Under rare circumstances may assist with basic laboratory tasks, identifying plankton and processing fish biological samples 
•    Maintain logs and forms for data collection
•    Collect and record harvest sampling data
•    Recommend and adapt techniques to improve efficiency and safety

WORK ENVIRONMENT 
•    Work will be performed at hatchery facilities and remote field sites, in rural or off-grid areas 
•    Exposure to water and marine conditions
•    Exposure to all weather conditions and outdoor environments 
•    Exposure to wild animals, flora, and fauna
•    Exposure to firearms, heavy machinery, and equipment 
•    Exposure to hazardous materials commonly found in fish culture work, fish waste, and other biological materials such as fish-borne bacteria and parasites, and bloodborne pathogens  
•    Exposure to physical agents such as cold, heat, noise, and hand-arm vibration 
•    Travel by small boat (skiffs), landing craft, small aircraft, and motorized vehicles 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
•    Must be physically capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds and performing strenuous tasks in a field-based/remote setting, rugged outdoor, and marine environments in varying weather conditions
•    Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and board vessels without assistance 
•    Ability to move freely around docks, floats, and uneven terrain 
•    Ability to use small boats (skiffs), hand tools, and power tools in line with manufacturer or operator standards 
•    Ability to recognize safety hazards/concerns and practice All-Stop safety approach 
•    Must be able to comprehend and communicate using the English language 
•    Must be able to hear and see to receive and interpret instructions 
•    Must be able to use telephones, computers, and other communication devices

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Tier I
•    High school diploma or equivalent

Tier II
•    6 months of Tier I experience at a PWSAC hatchery facility 
Substitutions
•    Associates or Bachelor’s in aquaculture, fisheries, marine biology, or a closely related field may replace 6 months of Tier I experience    

Tier III    
•    12 months of Tier II experience at a PWSAC hatchery facility 
Substitutions
•    18 months of paid semi-skilled experience equivalent to Tier II duties at a salmonid hatchery/aquaculture facility

Additional Requirements
Tiers I/II/III
•    Current and valid driver’s license preferred for some locations and projects

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
•    Ability to safely operate small boats, snowmobiles, hand tools, and power tools
•    Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain accurate records
•    Ability to perform simple arithmetic 
•    Ability to perform physically demanding work over extended periods of time; includes lifting 50lb bags of fish feed
•    Ability to work independently as directed and as a part of a team in remote and challenging environments 
•    Demonstrates resilience, adaptability, and self-sufficiency in isolated and resource-limited settings, maintaining productivity and emotional stability while living and working in extremely remote environments
•    Ability to work safely in the proximity of wild animals 
•    Exercise sound judgment and maintain professional conduct while working in challenging environments
•    Strong communication, organizational, and observational skills
•    Basic computer proficiency for data entry
•    Collaborate effectively and respectfully with employees, colleagues, public, vendors, contract staff, and any other stakeholders
