Temporary Staff Positions

Applications for temporary positions are accepted on a rolling admission basis. Be sure to include dates of availability for employment on the application.

Fisheries Technicians, Levels I – V:  Fish Technicians perform duties which include facility repair and maintenance, fish rearing, harvest, egg take; to summarize, general hatchery labor with an Alaskan experience.   Fish Technician employment opportunities are available from February to November.

Wages range begins with $10.00 per hour DOE with free room and board in modern, dorm-style facilities.  APPLY NOW

Food Service Cooks, Levels I – III:  Commissary staff prepares 3 meals/day, plus break time treats, utilizing a 4 week rotating menu. Daily cleaning of the kitchen and cafeteria common areas, plus routine clean-up of freezers and refrigerators are included duties. Must have an Alaska Food Worker’s Card.  Food Service Cook employment opportunities are available from February to November.

Hourly wage ranges begin at $11.35 – $14.55 DOE with free room and board in modern, dorm-style facilities.  APPLY NOW

Maintenance Technicians:  The Maintenance Technicians work closely with the hatchery maintenance staff in broad areas of preventative and routine maintenance, repair and improvement to the facilities, equipment and the various hatchery systems such as electrical, plumbing, and heating.  Maintenance Technician employment opportunities are available from June to April.

Qualifications include one year hands-on repair and maintenance experience, basic knowledge of carpentry, and a mechanical aptitude. Hourly wage range begins at $11.50/hour with free room and board in modern, dorm-style facilities.  APPLY NOW

Deck Crew: The Deck Crew functions as part of barge operations in the transport of freight, fuel and personnel to and from the hatchery sites and ports located in Prince William Sound. The responsibilities of the position are to provide immediate support to the Vessel Operator/Captain and/or First Mate in the execution of deck duties, vessel maintenance and vessel navigation for safe and efficient freight transport. Deck Crew employment opportunities are available on a rotation schedule from approximately April to November.

Hourly shipyard and maintenance rate begins at $15/hr. Boat time or sea time rate begins at $150/day. APPLY NOW

Hatchery Full-time Regular Positions

Fish Culturist I: Fish Culturist I functions as part of the hatchery operations team in the cultivating and rearing of fish. Under supervision, initiates, supervises and performs complex paraprofessional or technical field, laboratory, or office work, or directs minor segments in various phases of hatchery operations.  Independent judgment is exercised with written procedural approaches and only unique and complex situations referred to the supervisor.

Incumbents may act as the technical project leader of a programmatic segment of a hatchery project. As senior technical specialists, incumbents are allowed discretion in achieving objectives directed toward goals and assignments which require considerable knowledge of principles and practices of aquaculture, and a thorough knowledge of culture for one or more salmonid species. Incumbents summarize data in written reports and write recommendations for management decisions, and assist in writing the annual report representing the segment of the project for which the position is responsible.  Positions have authority to initiate and direct the work of lower level technicians and perform on-going functions in the areas of field logistics, supply and personnel/payroll.  Work may involve contact with the public.

Qualifications:

  1. High school graduation or equivalent, and one year of experience as a fish and wildlife technician I or II, or one year of technical laboratory or field work experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management or habitat protection, and one year work experience at an advanced level fish and wildlife technician or aide (III or higher).
  2. Must have a current driver’s license and pass a pre-employment drug test.

Maintenance Assistant: The Maintenance Assistant functions as part of the hatchery operations team in the cultivating and rearing of fish. Under general supervision, conducts year-round, 24-hour a day when necessary, preventative maintenance and repair duties for the efficient operation of the overall hatchery facility and equipment.

Qualifications:

  1. Post secondary training in an accredited vocational-training school in one of the building, mechanical, or electrical trades; and one year of semi-skilled experience in building and plant maintenance work
  2. Must have a current driver’s license and pass a pre-employment drug test.

Assistant Hatchery Manager: This position functions as a full assistant to the Hatchery Manager in the operation of the fish hatchery, providing an excellent opportunity to advance one’s fisheries career. The position has a broad range of responsibilities for fish culture, fish harvest and hatchery maintenance, along with scheduling and supervising the seasonal fish technician staff.  Administrative responsibilities include assisting with operation planning and budgets, supply procurement and ordering.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree with a major in fisheries science or closely related field, and two years experience as a Fish Culturist.

Wages and Benefits: Wage range begins at $43,000/year.  Benefit package includes furnished housing and utilities, health and life insurance, generous annual leave, 403(b) retirement plan and relocation assistance.
